Traditional Music Workshop with Karen Tweed

September 23, 2011 by General Administrator
Traditional Music Workshop with Karen Tweed
Sun 6th Nov 11:00am – 5:00pm
Moseley Dance Studio, 132 Alcester Road, Birmingham B13 8EE
Last year we enjoyed a great day of music with Karen Tweed.  We’ve invited her back and are looking forward to another fun experience.
Karen is an inspiring collaborator, established accordion teacher and has produced inspiring work with Timo Alakotila, The Poozies and Ian Carr (amongst many others). She loves working with mixed instrumental groups in workshops to produce and encourage ideas that take simple melodies into unusual and innovative arrangements, while gently nurturing musicians to try dynamic ideas and ultimately feel confident to create their own wonderful arrangements.
Exploring melodies from Europe and the British Isles, this workshop is open to all instruments and intermediate standard and above.  Notation of the main themes can be provided in advance.
Tickets £20 from meetings of the Moseley Village Band, or call 0121 247 3856
The Traditional Arts Team runs activities in the Midlands relating to traditional song, music, storytelling and dance, and publishes the Folk Monthly magazine.  More info at www.tradartsteam.co.uk

Traditional Arts Team events update Sunday 18th Sept

September 14, 2011 by General Administrator

Sunday 18 Sept no music session, go to SUN STATIONS instead!

Normally we have a traditional music session on the third Sunday of each month at the Prince of Wales pub in Moseley. However, there won’t be one on Sunday 18 September. Instead we are encouraging people to go along to a great night at the Kitchen Garden Cafe in Kings Heath, featuring Luke Daniels and John Dipper.

For those of you who don’t know them, Luke Daniels is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in the melodeon or button accordion who has collaborated with a range of artists and organisations including Riverdance, London Jazz Festival, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Folkworks and English National Opera. John Dipper grew up steeped in the traditions and culture of Southern England, plays fiddle and concertina, is a respected and established performer who also works with Chris Wood and Robert Harbron in the English Acoustic Collective and with groundbreaking string quartet Methera.

Sun Stations explores the music, customs and festivities of the old ritual year. Using ingenious archive material and arresting new folk music, providing audiences with an entertaining view of English culture spanning back more than half a millennium. We’ll also discover the English penchant for hurling cakes and buns at crowds, weighing the Town Mayor and how the character of Old Tosspot used to make a regular appearance each year. . .

Sun Stations, a compact compendium of folk music and customs, plus all the weird bits.
Sunday 18 Sept, Kitchen Garden Cafe, 17 York Road, Kings Heath B14 7SA
Tickets £12 from 0121 443 4725 or www.wegottickets.com

The next session at the Prince of Wales will be on Sunday 16 October.

Please pass this message on to anyone else you know who might be interested.

Let us know if you don’t want to receive messages of this kind in future.

All the best – Pam

Free music workshops this weekend

September 6, 2011 by General Administrator

There will be two great music workshops this weekend as part of the Moseley Folk Festival. As they are at the Bulls Head in Moseley they are free to everyone with or without Festival tickets!

Saturday, 12 to 1:30 – Bluegrass workshop with the Toy Hearts
————————————————————-
In an exclusive workshop for the Moseley Folk Festival, The Toy Hearts will uncover the rich history of bluegrass music and its traditions, through exploration of the genre’s founders and subsequent pioneers. Providing interactive examples, the band will take an in depth study into the acoustic instruments that complete a bluegrass line-up and their global origins.
Specifically, The Toy Hearts will investigate how each instrument lends
itself to the contribution of bluegrass music’s distinctive rhythm/drive, whilst also identifying the wide array of musical influences, including country, swing, jazz and the blues, all of which helped shape formation of the genre in the late 1940s. Within the workshop there will also be
discussion around the current progression of Bluegrass Music around the world, through recognition of the important role that young people play and the current leadership opportunities available to help preserve and develop its legacy. Throughout the workshop there will be ample opportunity for questions, demonstrations and examples of specifics, whilst exploring ways in which you can learn, jam and get involved with the wonderful world of Bluegrass Music. Attendees and enthusiasts are strongly encouraged to bring along their musical instruments, all ages welcome!

Sunday 1pm to 2:30 – Music workshop with Bellevue Rendezvous
————————————————————
Come and learn new tunes from Scotland and Europe on fiddle and nyckelharpa with Ruth Morris and Gavin Marwick. They have a wealth of travelling musical experience having played professionally and enthusiastically across Europe and other parts of the world, both individually and with groups including Bellevue Rendezvous, The Unusual Suspects, Iron Horse, McFall’s Chamber and Ceilidh Minogue. Many tunes have been learnt and inspiration has been had at concert halls, firesides, backstage areas, laybys and festivals from Ashkabad to Vancouver. Both musicians are experienced workshop tutors – Ruth runs community music and dance projects at home in Galloway while Gavin is a prolific composer, session player and theatre musician with “a CV that reads like a Who’s Who of Scottish music”.

Rhythm circle at Canalside – open to members and non-members

August 30, 2011 by General Administrator

These last couple of months have seen the piloting of a new rhythm circle at Canalside, and we now feel ready and excited to open it up to anyone else who might be interested in coming along. That’s you… and anyone else you think could be up for it!

Picture the scene: a group of rhythm-makers round a blazing fire at the Canalside social area… drums, rattles, all kinds of percussion instruments, some home made or improvised…a fantastic session of rhythm-making under the evening sky… maybe dancing and fire poi … sharing food and drink … sound like your kind of thing?

As of October, this adults-only rhythm circle will be held monthly on the Friday nearest the full moon (for September the date is this coming Friday 2nd). If the weather is good, we will be round a fire in the social area of Canalside. If the weather’s rainy, we will be in the lovely pole barn.

We invite you to bring your own percussion instruments (including home-made) if you have any. A number of West African drums and rattles will also be available to play. We welcome both experienced and new rhythm-makers, so don’t worry if you’ve never had a go before – just come along, have a bash and enjoy the experience!

You are also welcome to bring snacks and drinks, for yourselves or to share, after we have made beautiful music together!

Here’s the important info you need to know:
Where? Canalside social area
When? taking us to the end of 2011:
Fri 2nd September;
